  • What are Combatives?
Combatives—often called close‑quarters combat—is a pragmatic blend of striking, grappling, and weapon tactics engineered for real‑world violence rather than sport. It strips away ceremony and complex rules, focusing instead on rapid threat‑neutralisation through simple, high‑percent techniques that hold up under extreme stress. Drawing on military and law‑enforcement doctrine yet adapted for civilian self‑defence, combatives trains practitioners to use fists, elbows, knees, clinch controls, edged or impact weapons, and improvised tools with one goal in mind: end the confrontation decisively and get home safe.

  • Why should a civilian learn combatives?
There is a fundamental difference between martial arts , sports and combatives. Many sports such as MMA , Wrestling , BJJ , Boxing , Muay Thai and Sanda are fantastic for learning the basics of Combat, however much of what happens in a REAL combat situation happens OUTSIDE of the actual fight. Then there's the adherence to a strict ruleset that can leave you unprepared for real combat, despite being at a competitive level. Traditional martial arts are the Combatives of the past, Karate , Kung Fu , Aikido , Kendo , Kali/Eskrima. They can still be very effective depending on the school and the training of the instructors but the schools often lack modern contexts such as laws, the weaponry , and even the situation. Combatives (at Ogi Dojo) are the best tools taken from everything compiled into a form that's simple, easy to execute and applicable to be legal for civilians to use as a self defence but also effective enough to use in more combative situations, we also teach the distinction between levels of violence that are appropriate for what situation you are in . ( Not every violent scenario requires a punch to the throat or the deployment of a knife.) "Self defence" is not a martial art, it is a legal term and the legal term of what constitutes a self defence scenario is very grey , especially in Australia. We teach the distinctions between various scenarios and how to still remain within a valid self defence claim, while keeping yourself and others safe. Civilians , Security personnel and Workers such as Nurses, Paramedics , Retail , Nightshift workers and similar occupations will benefit the most from training in combatives as they are often at high risks without the support of law enforcement, You are your own first responder!
